Fences and railings are one of our specialties. This is why we guarantee that powder coating is your best option for durable, long-lasting fence and railing finish. Fences and railings receive heavy traffic on a daily basis, and require a thick, stable coating in order to retain aesthetic quality. Powder coat is 4 to 10 times thicker than traditional liquid spray paint, and will give your fence or railing extra protection against any potential coating decay from frequent use.

Each type of powder coating we offer has its own properties, which create different options for the process. This is a great advantage for fences and railings, as it gives us the opportunity to adjust the materials and process to meet your needs. Once powder is evenly distributed through electrostatic spray gun application, all separate slats and pieces of a fence or railing will be evenly coated. The type of liquid solvent running and coagulation associated with fences and railings is also eliminated, giving you a smooth, even finish.

A good rule of thumb to use is to ask yourself this simple question:

“Is it metal?”

If it’s metal – it can be powder coated.

We can powder coat objects up to 24 feet long

There are some consistent patterns to be accounted for when powder coating. Your metal MUST BE CLEAN!

If it’s not clean – the powder coating job will be lousy.

So, how do you get off old paint to refurbish?  Sandblasting is a start.

Sandblasting is a general term used to describe the act of propelling very fine bits of material at high-velocity to clean or etch a surface. A sandblaster shoots abrasive material at high, medium or light velocity to remove paint, dust, oil and dirt. It is used to prepare the surface for sealing or painting, and may also be used to refurbish the original appearance of surfaces.

  • Easier than using chemicals or a wire brush to clean
  • Can also be used to remove paint as well as rust build up
  • The added roughness gives new paint or sealant a better grip on the metal

Sand is the most commonly used material. Other materials that can be used are steel grit, copper slag, walnut shells, powdered abrasives, even bits of coconut shell.

When painting, one doesn’t want to trap dust, dirt, or bubbles in a previous layer of paint, or other imperfections under the new layer. By launching small bits of abrasive at the surface at a high, medium or light speed, all imperfections are knocked loose and can then be easily washed off, creating an incredibly smooth surface upon which to lay the new layer of paint. Sandblasting may also be used for such projects as cleaning the hulls of ships or large structures such as the Golden Gate Bridge.

Sandblasting is a great preparation method for Powder Coat. When powder coating, it is very important for the item you are coating to be completely clean of oils, dirt, paint, rust, corrosion, and damaged plating (zinc, nickel, chrome, etc.).

As you can see, Superior Powder Coating in Pleasant Grove, Utah has all the equipment you need for your powder coating project. Whether it’s 2 feet long or 22 feet long – we can do the job!

Advantages and Disadvantages of Powder Coating

What are some of the “benefits of powder coating” you ask?

Help me understand the “advantages of powder coating” and some of the “disadvantages of powder coating” too…. ok, this post will help!

Powder coating is a protective and decorative finish

The advanced method of applying powder coating is used for both protective and decorative finishes to any metal which is used by consumers and industry.

The process uses a powder which consists of resin and fine pigment particles, electrostatically sprayed on the metal surface. This allows the powder particles to become charged and adhere to the metal surface while being electrically grounded, until the powder has heated up and smoothly fused with the metal in a curing oven. This provides a durable, uniform, attractive and high-quality finish.

Advantages & Benefits Of Powder Coating

In North America, the powder coating process is a fast growing technology for adding finishes to products. It accounts for more than 10% of all industrial based finishing applications.

Advantage – Powder Coating Is Durable

Powder coating provides businesses, consumers, and industries a long-lasting, economical, and durable finish with a range of color options available for nearly any type of metal.

Also, a powder coated surface will be more resistant against scratches, chipping, wear, and fading compared to other type of finishes. You can choose from an almost unlimited selection of colors, including, glossy, high-gloss, flat, fluorescent, candies, clear, hammer toned, iridescent, glitter and wrinkle.

The colors will remain vibrant and bright much longer than other finishes too. The selection of textures range between a smooth surface to matte or wrinkled finishes.

Advantage – Protecting the Environment

Not only does powder coating provide great finish, it is better on the environment. Liquid painting finishes that consists of solvents are known to be pollutants of volatile organic compounds. VOC’s wreak havoc on the air we breath – nobody wants that!

What’s awesome about powder coating is that it does not contain any solvents! It only releases very negligible amounts of VOC’s, if any within the atmosphere. This means that finishers no longer have a need of purchasing and maintaining expensive equipment for pollution control.

Advantage – Powder Coat to Save Money!

Eliminating VOC’s and reducing waste saves money in the long term. Companies remain in compliance with U.S. Department of Environmental Protection Agency regulations.

The customer reaps huge benefits in money costs because the finish lasts so much longer vs. other metal finish methods. Powder coating has many advantages.

Disadvantages Of Power Coating

While powdercoating is incredible, there are a few disadvantages:

  • Thin coating layers is difficult to achieve
  • Can break down with powerful UV rays
  • Color changes are difficult
  • Start up costs are high
  • “Touch ups” require starting over
  • Part has to be grounded in order to powder coat
  • Less control over the speed and amount of powder coating applied
  • Requires baking
  • Less control over smoothness
  • Must be painted electrostatically
  • Requires a powder coating over, spray gun and booth

The disadvantages aren’t really disadvantages IF you are looking for a long lasting, durable finish.

What products use powder coating?

Thousands of different parts and products  use powder coating:

Appliances

Appliance companies use powder coating applications on stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, water heaters, microwave ovens, and many other areas. Metal parts on washer and dryers are now powder coated instead of using porcelain enamel.

Automotive

Powder coating is used often in the automotive industry. Hubcaps, bumpers, wheels, decorative trim, door handles, truck beds, accent parts, filters, radiators, and various engine parts.

Auto bodies are starting to include a clear powder topcoat to help increase protection. Volvo,BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Chrysler, Ford, GM and VW all use powder coating in different aspects of their automobile creation.

Commercial Buildings and Offices

Powder coating is used in the architecture and building markets. Framing, aluminum extrusions for doors and windows, modular furniture, and interior railing use powder coating.

Everywhere you look there are various building and highway projects which use powder coating as well – guardrails, light poles, fencing, posts, and signs are a few examples.

Normal Daily Products

Many daily products are being powder coated to increase the quality of finishes. These products include antennas, lighting fixtures, and electrical elements. Farm equipment and tractors use powder coating. Fitness industries use powder coating on golf cards, golf clubs, ski poles, bicycles, snowmobiles, and other different types of exercise equipment.

Store owners often use powder coating for their shelves, display racks, vending machines, and store fixtures. At the office, computer cabinets, metal furniture thumbtacks, mechanical pens and pencils, among other accessories are often powder coated.

Often, parents use products that have been powder coated all the time! Cribs, baby strollers, wagons, metal toys and kids bikes are powder coated.

Homeowners also have powder coated items, such as snow blowers, lawn mowers, patio furniture, BBQ grills, electronic components, garden tools, toolboxes, bathroom scales, and fire extinguishers.

You can see the list for powdercoating possibilities is almost infinite! The advantages of powder coating are obvious.

What is your powder coating process? Superior Powder Coating Utah

Sometimes working in the powder coating industry can be difficult. A few customers have had a bad experience at an alternative outfit and they want to know what makes your process better than what they had in the past.

The question that is typically asked goes like this:

What is your powder coating process?

It’s a great question and an awesome chance to explain the science behind powder coating.

Step 1 – Cleanliness

If you want the best possible finish with your powder coating, it all starts with CLEANLINESS. That sounds like something your mother would say right?

Obviously the process for preparing each part depends on the base material, metals and “others” – like fiberglass. Typically, the part is thoroughly cleaned to remove and oil or grease on the surface.

The next part is called “etching“. This process removes any surface oxides and makes sure there is more surface area for the powder coating to stick to. After the part is etched, the part is cleaned again.

Step 2 – Preparing part for coat application

Once the part is properly cleaned to receive coating, we move on to prepare for the coat application. Manufacturers of powder coating systems use a special blend of polymer resin. They also use requisite curatives and pigments to create each individual color and the finish your blessed heart desires.

Because the color and finish of the powder is determined at the manufacturing facility based on you order, the finished powder used on your project can not be changed or it will produce and uneven result.

(Make sure your coater uses the same powder from start to finish of your project)

Step 3 – Powder Coating Application

Say the words, “Electromagnetic properties” – sounds awesome huh?

Well, the powder that is placed inside of a powder coating paint gun charges the particles using either friction or an electrical source. Science makes the powder stick!

Next, the part that is being coated is grounded to provide an opposite charge that will attract the particles as they are sprayed. The thickness of the application will vary depending on whether the coating is external or internal, or the type of environment that the part will be used in.

The powder will continue to stick to the surface of the part as long as it is grounded, which allows for multiple sprays to cover the part. This helps with the powder coating process.

Step 4 – Curing

Once the part is completely coated it is placed in an oven which heats the coating to a minimum of 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the powder reaches this temperature it melts and flows together, forming long chemical chains which give the coating its rigidity and durability.

As it cools, the surface of  the finish takes on a gel-like consistency until it reaches room temperature and is completely cured. Once again – science prevails!

Most powder coating finishes will not melt again once they have cured, meaning that they can be used in a wide range of applications and environments without cause for concern.

Powder coating is a scientifically proven finishing process. It requires specialized tools to achieve the electromagnetic charge for a strong bond.

Powder coating does offer a wide range of color and finish options – from glossy to matte. Powder coating also provides a more durable finish that is both corrosion and scratch resistant so your coating will last for years to come.

After your part has been powder coated, years later it can easily cleaned with warm soapy water and restored to its original shine within minutes.

Powder coating is a fantastic way to finish and protect parts made from nearly any material. It is suitable even in harsh environments where it may come in contact with chemicals or solvents. Your coating professional can adjust the thickness of the coating to stand up to industrial applications.

Thank you for reading about the answer to “What is your powder coating process?”

Make sure you are taking your parts to a knowledgeable and experienced powder coater to ensure proper curing and longevity. For more detailed information on powder coating in Utah, please contact us at Superior Powder Coating LLC.

Why Powder Coating?

Prepping the powder coating spray gun

Running a powder coating shop can be tough sometimes. Clients and customers ask all the time, “Why powder coating?” instead of a liquid based paint?

Powder coating is the finish of the future….and it’s here today!

What makes powder coating the best choice?

Powder coating looks like paint but acts like armor. It’s tough, attractive, cost-effective and easy on the environment. Powder coated products have established a technologically superior reputation for performance and durability.

How are products powder coated?

Finely ground particles of pigment and resin are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the surface to be coated. The charged powder particles stick to the electrically grounded surfaces until the powder is heated and fused into a smooth coating in the curing oven. The result is a uniform, durable, high quality finish.

Powder coating is one of the most economical, longest lasting, and most color-durable quality finishes available for metal. Powder coated surfaces are more resistant to chipping, scratching, fading and wearing than other finishes. You can choose from smooth to textured finishes….and colors from flat to semi-gloss to high gloss.

Here’s how the Powder Coating process works in 5 simple steps:

SANDBLASTING:   A quality finish starts with the proper surface preparation. We have our own in-house sandblasting booth. Sandblasting our own items allows us be in control of the entire powder coating process from start to finish. Our large blast room lets us handle both large and small jobs with ease.

After the sandblast, we go to the

CLEANING PROCESS:   We hand clean all items to ensure proper adhesion. Our pre-treatment process has been proven successful on steel, aluminum and galvanized substrates.  Products pass through our oven prior to the application of powder to “bake-off” any oils or grease that may still be on or inside the part.

PREPARATION:   High temperature masking tape is applied to designated surfaces to keep them from being coated. Silicon plugs and caps are used for threaded holes or shafts to protect them. We make sure we are clean and concise in our preparation before the powder coating process begins.

POWDER COATING:   Our oven and coating system ensures a superior finish for your item.  The powder coating process uses a dry mix of plastic resins, pigments and fillers. These melt and fuse together when heated. The powder is then applied by an electrostatic charged spray gun and carried by low velocity air to the surface of the piece to be coated. The electrostatic charge holds the powder particles in place. The charged particles adhere to the metal product until melted and fused into a solid coating in the curing oven.

CURING OVEN:   Once coated, the part is rolled into the curing oven and baked on. The heat of the oven causes a chemical reaction  that melts the dry powder to a liquid. The curing process causes it to harden, creating a highly durable “tough skin” finish.  Read about our brand new state of the art curing oven here

LARGE PARTS CAPABILITY:   Our facility can handle parts up to 24’ long. Forklift service available.

So now that you’ve read this you’re more than just a bystander, you can answer the question “Why powder coating?” with ease.

Feel free to give us a call anytime – day or night. We’re available via text message 24/7.

How to powder coat aluminum rims in 5 simple steps

Want to know how to powder coat your aluminum rims in 5 simple steps?

Superior Powder Coating for Aluminum Rims Process

Here are 5 steps to Powder Coating you should know before refinishing your rims:

Step 1

Bring your car over and drop it off. What color do you want your rims? Choose your color.

Step 2

Once wheels are dismounted, valve stem and weights are removed to prepare for sandblasting. The following stages must be followed to ensure lasting results. Reported problems with powder coating aluminum rims are a direct result of improper blasting or short-cutting the process. Be sure to confirm your Wheels are sandblasted to a Specification SSPC 5/NACE clean “white Metal” finish.

Step 3

The original wheels are sandblasted to a clean “White Metal” finish. This ensures a maximum powder bond. All impurities are removed before the powder is applied. This process also profiles the surface to provide for better adhesion. If your wheels aren’t sandblasted thoroughly the finish will be prone to flake or peel. Cleanliness is the most critical step of how to powder coat!

Step 4

The sandblasted wheels are statically charged and a small molecule epoxy primer is applied. After the primer is applied the wheels are heated to 400 degrees. The Primer offers a tighter mechanical bond between the top coat and the metal.

Step 5

Powdered wheels are heated to 400 degrees. After critical temperature is maintained the wheels are removed and returned to room temperature. The cooling process will harden the coating to a durable glossy finish. The powder coated wheels are returned to the body shop and mounted. Lugs are hand torqued for a final touch. Every wheel is finally inspected to confirm a perfect finish. 24hrs Later your vehicle is ready for pickup.

Superior Powder Coating guarantees your new wheels against rust or corrosion for 1 year. How awesome is that?

If you don’t understand Powder Coating Best Practices, you might end up with flaking, chipping or corrosion. Forget that! At Superior Powder Coating you won’t have to worry about these issues. We ensure a quality powder coating experience with long lasting results.

We do it right the first time. We know how to powder coat.

From the hand torqued lugs to the refined curing process, we provide the highest quality powder coating on the market. This is backed by our 1 Year Guarantee against rust and corrosion.

Top 5 Reasons to Powder Coat Your Products

We love our job at Superior Powder Coating for multiple reasons. We love to get dirty, we love to educate our clients and we LOVE to create beautiful metal finishes.

There’s really 5 top reasons to powder coat your products which is explained below. However, this quote simplifies things:

Powder is not bullet-proof but it is more durable than its liquid counterpart.  In a nutshell:  It takes a lot more energy to put powder on and consequently it is more durable then liquid coatings which are air dry, no oven – “easy on, easy off”.

When liquid guys come in to our lab the one thing they are amazed by is the impact resistance and durability of powder.  You can bend a Q Panel in half and the powder doesn’t splinter off.

Top 5 Reasons to Powder Coat Your Products:

Economics –

The economic benefits of powder coating are numerous but the largest benefit has to do with efficiency and overspray. The average transfer efficiency of powder coating is 60-70% and any over spray is a solid and can be reclaimed and re-used netting virtually no wasted product.

With liquid paint you have a transfer efficiency of 30-35%, roughly 50% of the product is evaporated and there is no possibility of reclaiming over spray. The base product for powder coating is also substantially cheaper than wet paint.

Safety –

Safely applying powder coating requires precautionary measures to avoid breathing in the powder and getting it on your skin. This is an easier task to manage since the product is a solid and inert (it doesn’t pose a health risk when not being sprayed).

During application it is recommended to stay out of the application zone and to avoid getting it on your skin (because of the minimal overspray this is completely manageable). The product does not contain harmful chemicals such as solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOC) that are often found in wet paint.

Environmental –

There are many environmental advantages of powder coating as well. Since there are no solvents or VOCs there is no damage to the environment during application. The waste is also not hazardous and can be disposed in the landfill.

Wet paint contains harmful chemicals that have been proven to deplete the ozone and produces hazardous waste that needs to be disposed of in an appropriate manner.

Mechanical –

Powder coating generally produces a coating twice as thick as standard paint.  The real advantage is its flexibility and ability to bend and yield with the material it is applied to.

This makes it ideal in the transportation industry where the products are subject to a lot of vibration and twisting as they move down the road. We have also found that they stand up way better to rock chips and other common road damage.

Production Advantages –

The main advantage from a production point of view is that when the powder coated product comes out of the oven it is completely cured within 20 minutes and ready to be put to work. Standard liquid paints can take days.

Finishing powder coating beautiful gate

You can literally put a powder coated object to work while it is still too hot to touch and not have to worry about wrecking the paint. As for production efficiency, with less waste over spray and less risk for runs and other defects, powder coating has become less of an art and a necessary skill taught to production staff.

What makes Powder Coating so awesome?

Powder Coating is the application of organic powder by electrostatic attraction to metal. Once cured by heat the finish is a smooth, hard skin. All processes are factory applied under controlled, stable conditions. This provides significant benefits over traditional wet painting.

Standard powder coatings provide excellent, cost-effective appearance-enhancing finishes. Powder coatings are somewhat equivalent to paint but much more durable, much more environmentally friendly and much less expensive than professionally-applied paint.

Powder coating is also excellent at withstanding exposure to chemicals, inclement weather, humidity, abrasion and other conditions detrimental to performance and appearance. Powder coating decreases the wear and tear of the finish, resulting in decreased maintenance cost and greater life cycle of the parts.

A key component of our coating procedure is the preparation of the metal substrate to enhance bond strength, which ensures lasting protection and appearance. We are equipped for aluminum conversion coating, five stage iron and zinc phosphate with reverse osmosis, grit blasting, abrasive tumbling, steam cleaning, chemical etching and phosphatizing articles of all shapes and sizes.

What is Powder Coating?

What is powder coating?

Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a dry powder and then cured in an oven. The part to be coated is grounded and the powder receives a static charge as it is sprayed and is attracted to ground. This keeps the coating in place until it is oven cured. Most painted metal products are currently powder coated.

What can be powder coated in an industrial setting?

Most objects that are powder coated are made of metal. The powder cures at a minimum 350˚F, therefore the product to be coated must be able to handle that temperature. Here are just a few:

  • Sheet metal and metal stamping
  • Aluminum castings and extrusions
  • Structural Steel
  • Ornamental wrought iron
  • Railings
  • Industrial components
Wet Paint vs Powder Paint?

Many characteristics of powder coat make it a superior alternative to wet spray paint, including the following:

Dry Film Thickness – Powder coat is 4 to 10 times thicker than traditional liquid spray paint. Wet paints are applied in thicknesses of 0.5 to 1 mil (a mil is one one-thousandths of an inch, or 0.001-inch). Powder coat is applied in thicknesses of 2 to 6 mils for decorative finishes or 6 to 10 mils (and thicker) for functional finishes.

Hardness – Decorative powder coat is physically harder than wet paint. This property translates into significantly greater scratch and chip resistance, and thus generally better durability.

Adhesion – Powder coat adheres to the substrate better than spray paint. Partially a function of the sophisticated pretreatment process that all parts go through prior to coating, the excellent adhesion contributes to chip resistance as well as corrosion resistance.

Flexibility – Powder coat can withstand bending without cracking or flaking. Powder manufacturers publish flexibility test results that demonstrate between 100-800% elongation before failing!

Corrosion Resistance – Proper pretreatment and powder coat finish selection results in corrosion resistance which can far surpass traditional spray paint. Test results show salt spray tests of 1000 hours and longer without failure, and functional coatings are even more corrosion resistant. That’s not to say powder coat cannot be scratched, because if you work hard enough you can scratch anything. With traditional spray paint the rust at a scratch exposed to the elements will spread and lift the surrounding paint until the finish is ruined. With an appropriate powder finish, a deep scratch left in the elements long enough to ruin spray paint will still be a rusty scratch.
